MATERIALS ACCEPTANCE POLICY


We provide options for homeowners, contractors and do-it-yourselfers when faced with the leftovers of remodeling and building removal projects of all scopes and sizes. All donations are tax deductible.

All items accepted at staff discretion based on condition of items as well as space allotment in our warehouse.

When bringing us materials we recommend you first contact us by phone or email.

APPLIANCES

No more than 10 years old unless vintage (pre-1970). No unusual colors (brown, avocado, harvest gold). Natural gas and propane appliances accepted more commonly.

  • Freezers - Yes, if in good condition.
  • Furnaces - Generally yes.
  • Hot Water Heaters -
    Gas / Propane - Yes, if in good condition.
    Electric - Yes, if brand new or in EXCELLENT condition.
  • Stoves / Ranges -
    Gas - Generally yes.
    Electric - Must be in EXCELLENT condition, new or pre-1970's.
    Propane - Generally yes.
  • Ovens - Generally yes if gas. If electric, Must be in EXCELLENT condition, new or pre-1970's.
  • Stove Hoods - Yes if in excellent condition. Stainless steel okay.
  • Radiators - Yes, without excessive peeling or rust.
  • Refrigerators - Yes, if cleaned out and in good condition.

CABINETS

Must be structurally sound. No splitting at joints. No missing drawers or doors. No water damage. Particleboard cabinets accepted under stricter discretion.

  • Bath Vanities - Yes, with or without sink okay.
  • Filing cabinets - Yes, if not rusted and in good working order.
  • Ironing Board Closets - Generally yes.
  • Kitchen Cabinets - Yes, uppers, lowers, corner cabs, all okay.
  • Medicine Cabinets - Yes, if in excellent condition.
  • Metal Cabinets - Yes, if rust is minimal.
  • Cabinet Doors - We generally accept cabinet doors of all shapes and sizes independently of cabinets.

DOORS

Interior and exterior doors generally accepted with or without jambs. Free of rot, bowing, twisting, holes (dog/cat doors), abnormal alterations and structural damage.

  • Bi-folds - Generally yes to louver or paneled. Check regularly updated take/no take list for hollow core.
  • Closet Doors - Yes if solid wood, louvered or paneled. NO HOLLOW CORE.
  • Dutch - Generally yes. Missing/broken panes okay. Unusual width/height okay.
  • French - Generally yes. Missing/broken panes okay. Unusual width/height okay.
  • Garage Doors - Generally yes if rigid panel or particle/pressboard. MUST have all hardware. Vintage/ new carriage doors generally accepted. No roll-up garage doors.
  • Hollow Core - Currently not accepted. Exceptions rarely made for ones unpainted and in excellent condition.
  • Mirrored Closet Doors - Yes if not too many in stock.
  • Half or Full Lite Doors with Glass - Yes if high value, contemporary.
  • Paneled - Generally yes. Must be in good condition (no excessive peeling paint, warping or splitting). Hollow core paneled generally okay.
  • Screen Doors - If aluminum; must be in EXCELLENT condition and complete with hardware. Others generally accepted: new, wood and vintage.
  • Sliding Glass Doors - Must be double paned with seals intact (no signs of fogging). Vinyl and aluminum generally accepted. Doors accepted without frame only when needed in stock.
  • Solid Core Flush - Generally yes, with or without jamb.

ELECTRICAL / LIGHTING

Must meet current code requirements.

Generally accepted fixtures include: Brass, ceramic, commercial, globe lighting, and sconces, fluorescent lights, track lighting, vanity lights and vintage fixtures.

  • Ceiling fans - No.
  • Chandeliers - Yes.
  • Electrical Boxes - Yes if unused and current with code requirements.
  • Electrical Switches - Plugs, breakers, etc. - YES.
  • Electrical Cables - Yes if in lengths over 15'.
  • Miscellaneous Electrical - Switch plates, conduit, etc. - generally yes.

FLOORING

No lengths less than 2' unless butt grooved. No excessive paint, twisting, bowing, rot, cracking or crowning.

  • Tongue and Groove - Generally yes, must have at least 75% of tongue and groove (T & G) lengths intact.
  • Parquet / Pergo - Yes if new and in packaging.
  • Vinyl / Linoleum - Yes if in excellent condition and more than 100 sq. ft.
    * Please record dimensions on outside of roll before bringing in.
  • Commercial Vinyl Tile (CVT) - Yes if in good condition. Most colors accepted.

LUMBER / SHEET GOODS

Must be free of rot, creosote or nails. No excessive paint, bowing, twisting or crowning. No lumber lengths less than 6 feet. No sheet dimensions less than half sheet.

  • Drywall - Must be full sheets; if space in warehouse allows.
  • Glue-Lam Beams (GLB's) - Yes
  • Moulding / Trim - Yes if lengths longer than 5'. No press / fiberboard trim unless in excellent condition.
  • Paneling - Yes if full sheets and in excellent condition.
  • Pegboard - Generally yes.
  • Pressboard / Particleboard / OSB - Generally yes if at least half sheet and in good condition.
  • Pressure Treated - Yes.
  • Shingles / Shakes - Generally yes.
  • Siding -
    NO if vinyl or T111.
    YES if cedar, wood or metal.

MASONRY & TILE

Must be unbroken, cleaned of mortar & grout.

  • Brick - Yes if whole. Some mortar attached may be acceptable.
  • Concrete / Cinder Block - Yes if whole. Some mortar attached may be acceptable.
  • Glass Block - Yes.
  • Pavers - Yes if whole.
  • Pier Block - Yes if whole.
  • Tile - Yes if in quantities of more than 4 sq ft. Must not have excessive grout attached.
  • Slate - Yes, some breakage okay.
  • Ceramic Roofing Tiles - Yes if whole.

PLUMBING FIXTURES
SINKS • TUBS • TOILETS • FAUCETS

Free of chips, cracks, and excessive hard water stains. No odd colors (pink, brown, blue, avocado, harvest gold, etc.).

  • Fiberglass Shower / Tub Stalls - Yes if in excellent condition.
  • Shower Pans - Generally yes.
  • Sinks - Yes if self-rimming with no huddie rims (the metal rim around certain older style sinks).
    Cast Iron Enameled - Yes.
    Stainless Steel - Generally yes, if space in warehouse allows.
    Stainless Steel Enameled - Only if in excellent condition.
    Cultured Marble - No unless attached to cabinet and is in excellent condition.
    Corian - Yes.
    Utility - Generally yes. Plastic ones must be in excellent condition.
    Porcelain - Generally yes.
    Wall hung / Pedestal - Generally yes.
  • Toilets - Yes if low-flow (1.6 GPF). Must be intact with all inner hardware. Some allowances made for vintage toilets.
  • Tubs - Generally yes to cast iron enameled / skirted; must be white / off white.
    Claw Foot - Yes; with or without feet.
    Stainless Steel Enameled - NO.
    Hot tubs / Jetted tubs - Generally yes if working and with hardware.

WINDOWS

Free of rot, bowing, twisting, and structural damage. Seals must be intact if thermal paned / double paned (no visible signs of fogging).

  • Aluminum - Must be double paned, smaller than 15 sq ft. Seals MUST be intact.
  • Leaded - Generally yes, some panes broken okay.
  • Vinyl - Generally accepted - seals MUST be intact.
  • Wood - Can be with or without casement. Multi-paned sashes are generally accepted. Some broken panes okay. Casement windows accepted only when in excellent condition.
  • Picture Windows - Accepted at staff discretion.
  • Window Sash Weights - Accepted at staff discretion.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Assorted Small Hardware - Light switch plates, nails, screws, nuts, bolts, vents, screens, plumbing fittings, etc. are generally accepted when clean and contained.
  • Chalkboards - Yes
  • Copper Pipe - Must have lengths over 6'. No solder.
  • Electrical Hardware - Items such as plates, switches, etc. - generally yes.
  • Fencing - Generally accepted in lengths over 10': Chain link, chicken wire, and welded / woven.
    Wrought Iron - Yes if not excessively rusty.
    Wood - Yes if not rotting, twisted, etc.
  • Flashing - 8' lengths or more; metal or vinyl okay.
  • Glass Sheets - Generally not accepted unless obscure / wavy.
  • Mirror - Generally okay.
  • Screws & Nails - Generally yes if packaged neatly.
  • Stove Pipe - Yes if longer than 3'. Caps also accepted. Double and triple wall generally accepted.

Regrettably, Olympia Salvage Currently CANNOT Accept the Following Materials:

  • Carpet
  • Office Partitions
  • Fluorescent light bulbs and fixtures containing PCBs (look on the ballast for "no PCBs" stamp)
  • Appliances more than 10 years old (unless vintage)
  • Window treatments such as mini blinds, curtains and drapes (exceptions made for wood blinds)
  • Liquids and powders including paint, open bags of cement, mortar, drywall mud, etc
  • Toxic or flammable products
  • Chemicals of any kind as well as containers that may have once held chemicals
  • Batteries and items containing mercury
  • Materials containing asbestos
  • Baseboard heaters and other electric heaters more than 5 years old
  • Shower doors
  • PVC / Drainage Pipe
  • Ceiling Fans
  • Commercial items are accepted at staff discretion
  • Window sash weights - accepted on a very limited base
  • Garbage disposals - accepted on a very limited base
  • Toilets that are not 1.6 GPF or incomplete
  • Hollow core doors
  • Countertops - especially "L" shaped, ones with cutouts or dated colors
  • Loose glass of any size, unless specialty, or "wavy"
  • Lumber / Trim / Molding that has nails, rot or shorter than 4'
  • Sinks that are cultured marble or outdated colors (brown, orange, harvest gold, etc)
  • Tile with grout still attached
  • Upholstered or office furniture
  • Windows that are aluminum single paned, thermal paned without a frame or with broken seals
  • Wood burning stoves unless antique or highly styled
