OUR MISSION
It is the mission of Olympia Salvage to promote environmental sustainability, to divert building materials from the waste stream, and to provide affordable alternatives to the consumption of our limited natural resources.
ABOUT US
Olympia Salvage is a self-sustaining 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are a licensed, bonded, and insured demolition contractor providing deconstruction and building material salvage services to Thurston, Pierce, Mason, Lewis, Kitsap, King, and Grays Harbor counties. Committed to providing affordable alternatives to new materials, our 18,000 square foot store features a wide variety of building materials including: cabinets, doors, windows, lumber, plywood, lighting, plumbing, hardware, flooring, and more.
Deconstruction
Olympia Salvage has performed work on over 40 deconstruction projects ranging in size from 200 to 20,000 square feet. Projects consist of complete hand disassembly and machine assisted, or hybrid, deconstruction. Our experience with residential, commercial, and industrial buildings positions us as an industry leader in deconstruction, serving the greater South Puget Sound Area.
Used Building Material Sales
Our deconstruction operation and non-structural salvage services provide a constant flow of building materials to our retail store. Additional materials are received by donation directly at the store. Our mission to provide affordable alternatives to new materials means we discount our entire inventory by roughly 50%.
OUR HISTORY
Olympia's first deconstruction operation was originally developed by Quinn Vittum of Sound Builder's ReSource (SBR), an organization run by South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity.
By April 2003, SBR developed a full scale deconstruction operation, taking down buildings by hand, licensed as a demolition contractor. In July 2004, Habitat for Humanity decided to reorganize the SBR operation. This entailed eliminating the deconstruction / field operation and reverting back to a donations-only acquisitions structure.
Addressing the community's desire to continue deconstruction in South Puget Sound, several former SBR employees founded Olympia Salvage in 2004, operating out of a small space in the Port of Olympia building for the first 2 years. The continued efforts of the staff and a $25,000 grant from The Edwards Mother Earth Foundation allowed Olympia Salvage to move into its larger current retail space at 415 Olympia Avenue NE in April of 2007, increasing its capacity by 15,000 square feet.
